Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday (July 9) disbursed a Rs 352 crore package for 32 lakh workers engaged under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in the state from April to June. The financial package was a part of the Odisha government’s special COVID-19 package of Rs 1,690 crore for the poor. Each of the 32 lakh workers was given an extra amount of Rs 50 per day in addition to their wages, under the MGNREGA. According to a draft of the proposed population control bill, anyone violating the two-child policy in Uttar Pradesh will be debarred from contesting local bodies elections, from applying for or getting promotion in government jobs, and receiving any kind of government subsidy. Kerala on high alert after 14 confirmed Zika virus cases

Cases of Zika virus in Kerala went up to 14 on Friday with the National Institute of Virology (NIV) confirming 13 more cases. Following this, the State has been put on alert. Among the infected was a 24-year-old pregnant woman who was diagnosed with the mosquito-transmitted disease on Thursday. Hers was the first case of the virus in the State. India logs 43,393 new COVID-19 cases, recovery rate at 97.19%.

India has recorded 43,393 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry. India’s active caseload stands at 4,58,727. The active cases constitute 1.49% of total cases. The recovery rate has risen to 97.19%. 2,98,88,284 people have recovered across the country so far. 36.89 crore vaccine doses were administered so far under a nationwide vaccination drive. The weekly positivity rate remains below 5%, currently at 2.36%. The daily positivity rate is at 2.42%, less than 3% for 18 consecutive days. The testing capacity has been substantially ramped up –42.70 crore total tests have been conducted.
