In a significant move to transform the state’s sericulture landscape, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has officially launched the E-RISE (Eri Rearing, Innovation, Spinning, and Empowerment) program. The ₹4.61 crore initiative is designed to fortify the Eri silk value chain, providing a direct boost to rural livelihoods and indigenous textile production.
Launched in the Ri-Bhoi district, the E-RISE scheme targets 1,200 farming households spread across 22 clusters. The primary objective is to transition from traditional methods to a more modernized, efficient system that ensures value addition remains within the state. By empowering farmers to process yarn locally rather than selling raw cocoons to outside markets, the government aims to bridge the income gap that has long affected local rearers. Government officials estimate that this strategic intervention will generate an annual economic value of ₹9.36 crore—more than double the initial investment—marking a major milestone in the state’s self-reliance goals. The chief minister’s visit to Umsning also saw the foundation stone laying for a new mini stadium at Patarim. This project is a key component of Meghalaya’s preparations for the National Games 2027 and addresses a long-standing demand for better sports infrastructure in the region.
Furthermore, the state’s focus on human capital was reinforced with the launch of Project ASPIRE. A ₹1.57 crore collaboration with NITI Aayog, this initiative will provide 24/7 academic support, career counseling, and coaching for competitive examinations, ensuring that the youth of Meghalaya are well-equipped for future professional challenges.
By integrating traditional sectors like silk rearing with modern sports infrastructure and advanced educational support, the Meghalaya government is signaling a holistic approach to state development.
