Meghalaya CM Inaugurates Nabon Memorial Home; Sanctions ₹25 Lakh for Women’s Welfare

In a significant step toward bolstering social security for vulnerable women, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Nabon Memorial Home at Mawïong Rim on Saturday. The facility is dedicated to providing shelter, care, and a sense of belonging to destitute and abandoned women within the region.

Addressing the gathering during the inaugural ceremony, Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the government’s commitment to social welfare. He described the home as more than just a shelter, calling it a vital space designed to offer safety, dignity, and comprehensive support to its residents. To ensure the facility remains operational and effective, the chief minister announced an immediate financial grant of ₹25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF).

The home carries deep historical and cultural significance, named after Ka Nabon, who is revered as the first Christian woman convert in the Khasi Hills. This legacy of pioneering spirit is reflected in the home’s mission to provide a foundation for those who have been marginalized by society.

The project is a collaborative effort, undertaken by the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri-Lum Presbytery in partnership with the Shillong Ri-Lum Presbytery. By combining community-driven initiatives with government support, the home aims to create a sustainable ecosystem of care.

Government officials present at the event noted that the Nabon Memorial Home is intended to serve as a primary support center for women in crisis. Beyond basic housing, the facility represents a community-led response to the challenges of abandonment and poverty. With the newly sanctioned funds, the management plans to streamline operations and enhance the quality of life for all women seeking refuge within its walls, marking a new chapter in the state’s humanitarian efforts.
