Recently the GSU has sought the appointment of a Garo SDO and SDPO for the Garo Hills region, a statement issued by the union here on Sunday said.Actually the GSU, Western Zone North, Dadenggre lamented that not a single resident from the area has been appointed as the SDO or SDPO of the sub-division since it first received its status in 1982. Over one lakh people affected in Meghalaya Floods

Over a lakh have been affected due to the floods in the plain belt of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya, the area District Collector Ram Singh said. Five people have lost their lives. The area has witnessed a surge in water levels since the last one week, with most areas submerged under the flood, caused by the backflow of the Brahmaputra river. The Meghalaya government has extended the night curfew from 9 pm to 5 am till June 30, officials said on Sunday. The night curfew was to be in force till Monday.
