Mizoram Authorities Nab Two for Allegedly Sharing Obscene Material Online

Mizoram Police have arrested two persons for allegedly uploading obscene content on YouTube. The channels had uploaded multiple videos containing sexually explicit content accessible to the public, including minors, an official statement said. Police said that upon receiving credible inputs regarding the publication of sexually obscene content on YouTube, the Cyber Crime Police Station initiated an investigation into the matter. The investigation revealed that two YouTube accounts were engaged in publishing multiple videos containing sexually explicit material narrated in Mizo language. The contents, which were publicly accessible, were found to be obscene in nature and capable of corrupting or adversely influencing members of society, including minors. Prima facie, the acts disclosed commission of offences punishable under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the Information Technology Act, 2000. Accordingly, Cyber Crime Police Station registered Cyber Crime PS Case No. 16/26 and immediately commenced further investigation into the matter.

With assistance received from YouTube and through sustained technical investigation carried out by the Investigating Officer, the identities of the persons operating the said YouTube accounts were successfully established. One account was operated by Henry Lalrinpuia (29) of Hunthar, Aizawl while the other account was operated by Vanlalhmangaihzuala (35) of Chaltui, Phuldungsei. Following police intervention, the obscene contents were promptly removed from public access, and the two accused persons were arrested and their respective mobile phones seized for further legal action. Mizoram Police reiterated that dissemination, publication, or circulation of obscene or sexually explicit material through social media and online platforms is a serious criminal offence and strict legal action will be taken against persons involved in misuse of digital platforms in violation of law.
