‘Not Just Geography, But Strategic Destiny’: Rajnath on Northeast at EAC HQ

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday described the Northeast as a crucial pillar of India’s security architecture, prosperity and strategic strength, stating that the region holds a central position in the country’s national security framework and foreign policy objectives.

Addressing personnel at the Headquarters of the Eastern Air Command in Shillong, Meghalaya, Singh said the entire eastern region is closely linked with India’s strategic future, where borders, rivers, cultures and communities are deeply interconnected.

“The entire region is an integral part of India’s strategic destiny. When we speak of the East, we are not merely referring to a geographical area, but to a dynamic space where history, geography, security and the future converge,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of the Eastern Air Command, the Defence Minister said it remains an essential pillar in safeguarding India’s eastern frontier and strengthening national security.

Singh emphasised that the Northeast should not be viewed merely as a geographical frontier but as a major driver of India’s security, economic growth and strategic influence. He said the region plays a significant role in the implementation of India’s Act East Policy, which aims to enhance connectivity, trade and cooperation with Southeast Asian countries.

He added that as India’s global influence continues to grow amid a rapidly changing international environment, the strategic importance of the Northeast will increase further.

The Defence Minister stressed the need for technological advancement, strategic foresight and institutional innovation to maintain military preparedness in the face of emerging challenges. He said modern warfare is increasingly shaped by hybrid threats, cyber challenges, information warfare, logistics resilience, supply chain security and drone technology, making traditional preparedness alone insufficient.

Calling for greater self-reliance in defence, Singh said achieving Aatmanirbharta is essential for ensuring national security on India’s own terms. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said the operation demonstrated India’s ability to protect its sovereignty and security through growing indigenous capabilities.

“Through Operation Sindoor, we demonstrated to terrorists and their handlers that India will not compromise on its security and sovereignty,” Singh said.

He praised the Eastern Air Command for its role in battlefield operations, peacetime deployment, disaster response, high-altitude missions and border management, describing it as a vital component of India’s eastern defence structure.

Commending the soldiers for their dedication under difficult conditions, Singh said their sacrifices enable citizens to live secure lives. He also praised the armed forces for their role in providing assistance during natural disasters and crises.

The Defence Minister reiterated that the Northeast is not only a geographical region but a key element of India’s security, prosperity and strategic power. He said the region’s importance has grown as India strengthens its position on the global stage.

Concluding his address, Singh described the armed forces as a symbol of national unity and diversity. He highlighted the increasing participation of women in the defence forces, stating that it reflects India’s cultural values while embracing modernisation.

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Eastern Air Command Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia and other senior Indian Air Force officers were present during the occasion.
