Bihar CM Nitish Kumar backs probe into Pegasus row; says, ‘proper investigation is needed’. For the past several days, the Parliament monsoon session has been interrupted many times. This is because the Opposition has raised the demand of debating the Pegasus spyware and investigating the matter. Pegasus spyware, developed by the Israeli cyber arms firm NSO Group is said to be used by govt to spy on journalists, politicians and activists in India. This created a massive political controversy and Opposition parties created a ruckus in parliament over it. Now, the Bihar CM is also demanding a probe into this.
“A probe should be done, indeed. We have been hearing about telephone tapping for so many days,” Kumar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Addressing reporters in Patna, the JD(U) chief also echoed the Opposition’s demand for a discussion on the issue in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, the report added.
Earlier, West Bengal government had demanded a probe by the Centre and later set up a two-member inquiry commission to probe the Pegasus spyware row.
The panel will probe the “illegal hacking, tracking and recording of mobile phones in West Bengal,” Mamata Banerjee said.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said she had set up the panel as the union government was “reluctant” to probe the Pegasus snooping row.
