Puducherry reports new COVID-19 cases

Puducherry recorded seven new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 10 am on Saturday, taking the overall caseload to 1,65,832, a senior health department official said. Director of Health G Sriramulu said the department evaluated 1,251 samples and seven new cases were found during testing. The death toll in the union territory remains at 1,962. The health department has tested 22,42,824 samples so far and 18,87,861 of them have been found negative.

14-year-old girl raped in Nagaur, Rajasthan

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by five people, including four teenagers, in Rajasthan's Nagaur district. The incident took place on April 6 in Chitwa police station area when the girl went to attend a family function. One of the juveniles is a relative of the victim. "A case was registered against five people at Maroth police station yesterday and the accused are being traced," Kuchaman City Circle Officer Sanjeev Katwa said.

Kolkata shops affected in fire

A fire department official said a fire gutted several shops in the Newmarket area of central Kolkata early on Friday morning. No loss was reported in the fire. The officer added, Five fire tenders took around 30 minutes to take the fire in control which took place around 3 am. The shops affected by the fire are on the ground floor of the building and some families live on the first floor.

Madhya Pradesh WCD team prevents a girl from marriage

A women and child development group in Madhya Pradesh has managed to prevent a 16-year-old girl from getting married in the Indore district. The Prevention of Child Marriage Act, 2006 prohibits the marriage of girls before the age of 18 and men below the age of 21. One new Covid-19 case in Ladakh

Ladakh recorded one new Covid case taking the number of infections to 28,258 on Friday. Of the total caseload, 22,977 infections were reported from Leh and 5,281 from Kargil. The death number remains unchanged at 228. So far, 28,025 COVID-19 patients already have recovered.

Former Punjab Congress president Sunil Zakhar will join the BJP on Thursday, days after quitting his old party. Jakhar quit the Congress last week after hitting out at former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Twitter, saying he was "not the asset" portrayed by the party leadership. SC grants SP leader Azam Khan interim bail

The Supreme Court on Thursday granted interim bail to Jailed Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in a cheating case, saying it was a fit case to exercise its extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to grant relief. Two police personnel found dead

Two police personnel were found dead in a paddy field near the Muttikulangara police camp in this north Kerala district on Thursday. The bodies have been identified as Mohandas and Ashokan, both havildars associated with the camp. Burn marks were found on the body, which is believed to be the cause of death due to electrocution. According to the police, the exact cause of death will be known only after a detailed forensic examination and post-mortem.
