Tata Salt reinforces focus on iodine awareness and nutritional well-being

Tata Salt has highlighted the importance of iodised salt in addressing iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) and supporting nutritional well-being across India, underlining the role of iodine in healthy pregnancies, child brain development, thyroid function and overall health.

According to the India Iodine Survey 2018-19, around 76.3 per cent of Indian households consume adequately iodised salt containing at least 15 parts per million (ppm) of iodine. However, awareness remains a key challenge, with only 22.4 per cent of respondents having a correct perception of the benefits of consuming iodised salt, while 61.4 per cent were aware that optimal iodine nutrition helps prevent goitre.

Iodine plays a critical role in preventing IDD and supporting mental development. Recommended daily iodine intake is around 140 micrograms for adolescents and adults, 90-100 micrograms for children aged one to 12 years, and 220-280 micrograms for pregnant and lactating women.

The nutrient is particularly important during pregnancy and the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, when thyroid hormone production supports brain cell formation and nerve development.

Launched in 1983 as India’s first national branded iodised salt, Tata Salt said its continued efforts to make iodised salt accessible support India’s broader nutritional priorities and the ongoing fight against iodine deficiency.
