Tensions Over Siang Project Escalate; MLA Oni Panyang’s Residence Allegedly Vandalised

Tensions surrounding the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) intensified in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district after a large group of protesters allegedly vandalised the residence of Geku-Mariyang MLA Oni Panyang.

According to reports, the residence of the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) legislator was targeted amid continuing protests against the proposed hydropower project on the Siang River. The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing agitation over the project.

Visuals from the site showed extensive damage to the property. Furniture, household belongings and parts of the structure were reportedly damaged during the incident. Videos circulating from the residence revealed debris scattered across several rooms, including broken wooden furniture, overturned containers, shattered household items and damaged walls.

The alleged vandalism occurred against the backdrop of sustained opposition to the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project by sections of local residents and community-based organisations. Protesters have expressed concerns over the project’s potential impact on the environment, local communities, traditional livelihoods and displacement of residents.

The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project has been a subject of intense debate in the region, with supporters citing its strategic and developmental importance, while opponents have demanded greater transparency and consultation before moving ahead with the project.

Authorities have not yet released a detailed statement regarding the incident, the extent of the damage caused, or whether any arrests have been made. Security personnel are reportedly keeping a close watch on the situation as tensions remain high in parts of the district.
