TMC condemns party MP Mahua Moitra’s ‘Kaali’ remarks

Trinamool Congress (TMC) condemned party MP Mahua Maitra’s comments on Goddess Kali in which she referred to the Hindu deity as a “meat-eating, wine-drinking goddess”.

“The comments made by @MahuaMoitra at #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and his views on Goddess Kali are made in his personal capacity and not endorsed by the party in any way or shape. All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments,” read the tweet, which is in a respectful agreement with TMC.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave East 2022 on Tuesday, Mahua Maitra responded to a controversy over a film poster showing Goddess Kali smoking a cigarette.

“Kali to me is a meat-eating, alcohol-drinking goddess. You have the freedom to think about the goddess. In some places, whiskey is offered to the gods and in others, it would be blasphemy,” Maitra said while speaking on the second day of the India Today Conclave East 2022.

“When you go to Sikkim, you will find that they offer whiskey to Goddess Kali. But if you go to UP, and you tell them that you offer whiskey as ‘prasad’ to the goddess, they will call it blasphemy,” Maitra said.

Reacting to Mahua Maitra’s comments about Goddess Kali, BJP chief Subvendu Adhikari told India Today that the TMC continuously “insults Hinduism” and would opt for legal remedies.

Adhikari also said that they expect West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee to take action against Mahua Maitra as she did against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Nupur Sharma recently ran into controversy for her alleged comments about Prophet Muhammad.
