Tripura Pushes for Full Trade Through Sabroom ICP

The proposed launch of full-fledged commercial trade through the Sabroom Integrated Check Post (ICP) with Bangladesh emerged as one of the key issues at the two-day Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026, with investors and business leaders seeking clarity on when the strategic trade corridor will become fully operational.Industrialists, exporters and business delegations from India and abroad repeatedly raised questions on the timeline for opening regular commercial trade through the Sabroom-Ramgarh border. Participants said the route could significantly improve Tripura’s connectivity with Bangladesh and international markets, making the state an important logistics and export hub for Northeast India. The issue gained further significance with the participation of Vivek Verma, Secretary, Department of Land Ports Authority of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, who interacted with stakeholders on matters related to border trade and infrastructure.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India M. Riaz Hamidullah also attended the conclave and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to maintaining strong and friendly relations with India. During his interaction with delegates, he said Bangladesh was keen to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, connectivity and economic partnerships, a message that was welcomed by investors exploring opportunities in Tripura.Established in March 2024, the Sabroom Integrated Check Post is one of Tripura’s most important infrastructure projects. Located on the India-Bangladesh border opposite Ramgarh, the facility is expected to reduce transportation costs and shorten transit time for cargo moving between Northeast India and global markets through Bangladesh’s Chattogram Port, situated about 72 kilometres away by road. Tripura currently has three operational land ports—Agartala (Akhaura), Srimantapur (Bibirbazar) and Sabroom (Ramgarh). While Agartala continues to handle the largest volume of passenger movement and cargo traffic, industry experts believe Sabroom offers greater long-term potential because of its direct access to Chattogram Port, one of Bangladesh’s busiest maritime gateways.

The discussions also came in the backdrop of the recent launch of the *Vinimay – Land Port Management System* by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The nationwide digital platform is designed to modernise land port operations by improving cargo handling, customs clearance and logistics management, and is expected to enhance efficiency at border trade points across the country, including those in Tripura.Industry representatives at the conclave said the commencement of regular commercial operations through the Sabroom corridor could give a major boost to exports, logistics, warehousing, food processing and manufacturing in the state. They noted that improved connectivity with Bangladesh would not only strengthen Tripura’s economy but also reinforce its role in India’s Act East Policy by creating easier access to regional markets in Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Southeast Asia. With strong investor participation and growing interest in Tripura’s strategic location, delegates said the timely operationalisation of full-scale commercial trade through the Sabroom Integrated Check Post would be critical to converting investment proposals announced during the Destination Tripura Business Conclave 2026 into sustained industrial growth, employment generation and long-term economic development.
