Union Warns of Operational Risks Amid Staffing Shortages in Bank of Maharashtra

The All India Bank of Maharashtra Employees Federation (AIBOMEF) has urged the management of Bank of Maharashtra to initiate a large-scale recruitment drive across cadres, citing severe staff shortages and increasing workloads across branches and administrative offices.

In a representation submitted to the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, the union stated that the lender’s rapid growth in business, profitability, asset quality, and branch network has not been matched by a corresponding increase in manpower. It warned that the gap between business expansion and staff strength has reached “alarming proportions.”

According to the union, 147 branches and offices are currently operating without clerical staff, while around 1,550 branches and offices lack sub-staff. It also noted that all branches and administrative offices are functioning without permanent part-time sub-staff, leading to significant operational strain.

The federation further alleged that employees are being compelled to perform multiple roles beyond their designated responsibilities, often under pressure to meet business targets, regulatory requirements, audit compliance, and customer service expectations. It also raised concerns over the increasing dependence on outsourced and contractual personnel, stating that such practices could pose operational, security, and reputational risks.

The union warned that prolonged staffing shortages may increase the risk of procedural lapses and weaken internal control systems. It also highlighted issues of employee stress, burnout, and work-life imbalance.

Bank of Maharashtra, however, continues to report strong productivity metrics, including high business and profit per employee among public sector banks, according to union data.
