Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and widespread waterlogging across Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Thursday, inundating several parts of the district headquarters town and disrupting normal life. Officials said no loss of life had been reported.
After hours of continuous rain, floodwaters rapidly accumulated in several localities, leaving roads, residential areas and public spaces under water. Tuibong was among the worst-affected areas, where knee-deep water was reported at several locations, causing major inconvenience to residents.
Roads across the town were submerged and resembled flowing streams, slowing vehicular movement and making it difficult for people to travel. Traffic was disrupted in many areas as commuters struggled to navigate through flooded streets.
Officials said the situation was worsened by an inadequate drainage system, which prevented rainwater from draining quickly. As a result, water remained stagnant in several low-lying areas for hours after the heavy downpour.
Floodwaters entered many houses, damaging furniture, household items and other belongings. Several families were left coping with waterlogged homes as the water level continued to rise. Vehicles parked inside residential compounds were also partially submerged, adding to the losses suffered by residents.
Authorities have begun monitoring the situation and are assessing the extent of the damage caused by the flooding. Officials said they are keeping a close watch on vulnerable areas and will take necessary measures if the situation worsens.
