Bharti Airtel Emerges as India’s Biggest Wealth Creator Over Five Years

Bharti Airtel has emerged as India’s largest wealth creator over the past five years, adding ₹7.64 trillion in value, according to the latest Burgundy Private Hurun India 500 Report. The report highlights the changing dynamics of India’s corporate landscape, with telecommunications, financial services and emerging technology sectors driving significant value creation.

In contrast, the information technology sector witnessed substantial value erosion during the same period. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and Wipro collectively lost ₹8.5 trillion in market value, making IT the biggest value-losing sector in the report.

The study revealed that the combined valuation of India’s 500 most valuable non-state-owned companies has reached $3.4 trillion, exceeding the GDP of several major economies. These companies collectively employ 8.9 million people, contribute ₹3.23 trillion in taxes and spend more than ₹13,400 crore annually on corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Reliance Industries retained its position as India’s most valuable private-sector company for the fifth consecutive year, with a valuation of ₹19.36 trillion. HDFC Bank ranked second at ₹11.88 trillion, followed closely by Bharti Airtel at ₹11.50 trillion.

The report also highlighted strong growth among several emerging companies. Stockbroking platform Groww led the valuation surge with a 430 percent increase, followed by major gains from companies in sectors such as real estate, electric vehicles, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods.

Financial services remained the largest sector in the ranking, while healthcare secured the second position. The report also marked the debut of four pure-play artificial intelligence companies and five Indian Premier League franchises, reflecting the growing influence of technology and sports businesses in India’s evolving corporate ecosystem.
