Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Disrupt Life in Tripura; Relief Camps Opened After Widespread Destruction

Severe storms accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds have caused widespread destruction across Tripura over the last two days, leaving at least two people dead and several others injured while damaging thousands of homes and disrupting electricity supply in many parts of the state. Officials said the storms affected several districts and caused major damage to houses, standing crops and power infrastructure. The situation has raised concern among residents as many families were forced to leave their homes after strong winds and heavy rain battered large areas. According to officials from the state disaster management department, one of the victims was a five-year-old child from Radhanagar area in Unakoti district. The child died after a mud-walled house collapsed during heavy rainfall and strong winds on Thursday. His brother was also injured in the incident and is receiving treatment.

In another incident reported from Longtarai Valley in Dhalai district, a man lost his life after being struck by lightning on Wednesday as storm activity continued across the state. Apart from the two deaths, four people were injured in separate incidents linked to the severe weather conditions. Officials said some of the injuries were caused by falling debris and house damage during the storms. The impact of the weather was seen in many villages and towns where strong winds uprooted trees, damaged rooftops and affected electricity lines. Authorities said nearly 3,997 houses suffered damage in different districts. Out of these, around 180 houses were completely destroyed, leaving many families without shelter. Several families spent difficult nights after their homes were damaged by the storm. In some areas, residents tried to protect their belongings as rainwater entered damaged houses. Local officials and emergency teams were deployed to assess the damage and assist affected people.

The state government has released interim relief assistance of around Rs 79.59 lakh for families affected by the disaster. Officials said the relief amount is being distributed to help families repair damaged homes and meet immediate needs. To support displaced residents, the administration opened four relief camps where around 243 affected families were given temporary shelter. Authorities later said that the weather situation improved and the families staying in the camps have now returned to their homes.
