New Income Tax Act Explained at Public Awareness Programme in Aizawl

Awareness Programme on the New Income Tax Act 2025 was successfully conducted at the Conference Hall of Taxation Department in Aizawl. The programme was attended by around 100 participants, including representatives from State and Central Government departments, educational institutions, businesses, banks, churches, NGOs, tax practitioners and officials of the Income Tax Department. The programme formed part of the larger awareness initiative launched by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ministry of Finance, following the “Prarambh 2026” outreach programme held in Guwahati on May 7 by the Office of Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Northeast Region. Lalramsanga Sailo, Commissioner of Income Tax, Shillong, delivered the keynote address on the New Income Tax Act, 2025. He highlighted that the exemption available under Section 10(26) for eligible Scheduled Tribe members continues under the new Act, where it is now placed under Schedule III. He also emphasized that while exempted tribals continue to enjoy statutory tax exemption benefits, compliance with applicable laws, procedures and verification requirements remains important in the modern digital tax environment. He further explained that the new law aims to simplify and modernize India’s tax framework through simpler language, streamlined provisions, better digital integration and improved voluntary compliance.

He also highlighted the growing importance of Income Tax Return filing for securing loans, refunds, visa applications, government tenders and as a valid proof of income, while noting that increasing tax compliance is creating new opportunities in accounting, auditing, GST, TDS and related professional services. Technical presentations were delivered by Manoranjan Behera, DDIT (Inv.), Guwahati, on major provisions of the New Income Tax Act, 2025, e-filing procedures, appeal filing and compliance with notices. Lhingneichoi, ITO, TDS, Aizawl, also delivered a session on TDS-related provisions under the new Act.

The programme also highlighted the Income Tax e-filing portal – Incometax.gov.in, which enables taxpayers to independently file returns, respond to notices, use video guides, AI chat bot, check refunds and access various online services digitally. An interactive Open House and Feedback Session were held where participants actively engaged with the speakers and clarified various taxation-related queries. The programme commenced with the screening of a short film on the Income Tax Act, 2025 and a welcome address by Sandip Mandal, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Silchar Range.
