Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings to the people of Sikkim on the occasion of the state’s Statehood Day, as the Himalayan state celebrates a historic milestone marking 50 years since joining the Indian Union. In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister praised Sikkim’s contribution to India’s development journey and wished prosperity and good health to the people of the state. “Greetings to my sisters and brothers on their Statehood Day. The contribution of Sikkim to India’s development is deeply valued. Wishing the people of the state good health and prosperity,” Modi wrote.
The Prime Minister also reflected on his recent visit to Sikkim during the ongoing 50th Statehood Day celebrations, saying he was deeply touched by the warmth and affection shown by the people of the state. “This occasion comes at a time when Sikkim is marking 50th Statehood Day celebrations. A few days ago, I had the good fortune of being among the people of Sikkim for the celebrations. The warmth I received in Sikkim will remain a part of my memory,” he added. Modi further assured continued support from the Central Government for Sikkim’s development and future growth.
“The Central Government will keep supporting Sikkim’s growth trajectory in the times to come,” the Prime Minister stated. Sikkim officially became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975, following a historic constitutional process. Since then, the state has emerged as one of India’s leading examples of sustainable tourism, organic farming, and ecological conservation. Known for destinations such as Gangtok, Nathula Pass, and Yumthang Valley, Sikkim continues to attract tourists from across the world while preserving its unique Himalayan culture and biodiversity. The golden jubilee celebrations of Sikkim’s statehood have included cultural events, official programmes, and initiatives highlighting the state’s achievements over the past five decades.
