Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on Wednesday announced a strategic partnership with Meta Platforms to develop a 168 MW AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking Meta’s first built-to-suit data centre capacity in India and a major boost to the country’s ambitions of becoming a global artificial intelligence infrastructure hub. Under the agreement, Meta will lease capacity from the facility, which is expected to be delivered within two years with an option for future scaling. The data centre will support Meta’s global infrastructure, core business operations and growing AI compute requirements, while strengthening its long-standing partnership with Reliance across connectivity, commerce and AI innovation.
RIL will provide end-to-end services for the project, including design, construction, management of utilities, renewable power supply, network connectivity and fully managed operational services. The company said the partnership positions Reliance as a single-window solutions provider for hyperscale AI infrastructure in India. Located in Gujarat, the facility will benefit from access to renewable energy resources, water availability, proximity to western submarine cable landing stations and Jio’s extensive fibre network. The data centre will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, reflecting the sustainability commitments of both companies.
Calling the partnership a “transformative moment” for India’s digital infrastructure, Reliance Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani said the project demonstrates India’s readiness to lead the global AI revolution and will help make Jamnagar a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing. Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the world-class facility would help scale the company’s AI infrastructure globally while deepening its long-term investment in India’s economy.
The partnership is also aligned with the Government of India’s policy framework that recognises data centres as strategic national infrastructure and seeks to attract global AI investments into the country. The development could accelerate demand for cloud services, AI-powered enterprise solutions and digital infrastructure investments across eastern India. Businesses in Kolkata, particularly in IT services, fintech and digital commerce, are expected to benefit from enhanced data processing capabilities and improved access to advanced AI infrastructure as India’s digital economy continues to expand.
