Rising demand for speciality healthcare drives Manipal Hospitals’ Northeast expansion push in Agartala

Growing demand for advanced healthcare services in Northeast India has prompted Manipal Hospital Mukundapur to strengthen its regional outreach through ‘Anveshana – Medical Education for Media’, organised in Agartala on Tuesday. The initiative focused on increasing awareness about neurological and spine-related disorders while highlighting the business potential of specialised healthcare services in emerging Northeast markets.

The programme brought together senior doctors including Dr. Sukalyan Purkayastha, Director and Senior Consultant, Neurointerventional and Endovascular Surgery, Manipal Hospitals East Region, and Dr. Anindya Basu, Senior Consultant and Clinical Lead – Spine Surgery at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, along with members of the media fraternity.

Hospital officials said the Northeast is witnessing a steady rise in lifestyle diseases, stroke cases, dementia, chronic spine disorders and musculoskeletal complications, creating increased demand for advanced medical infrastructure and super-speciality treatment. Nearly 690-700 patients from Tripura reportedly travelled outside the state last year for specialised procedures and advanced care.

Dr. Purkayastha said delayed diagnosis continues to impact stroke recovery outcomes, while Dr. Basu highlighted the growing number of younger professionals suffering from spinal disorders due to sedentary lifestyles, obesity and occupational stress.

In Agartala, the healthcare sector is emerging as a high-growth segment driven by increasing awareness, better connectivity with Kolkata and rising patient preference for specialised treatment closer to home. Industry observers believe hospitals expanding into the Northeast could benefit from strong regional demand, reduced patient migration to distant metro cities and growing investments in healthcare accessibility across Tripura and neighbouring states.

The ‘Anveshana’ initiative has earlier been held in Aizawl, Jamshedpur, Bardhaman, Malda and Darjeeling.
