Assam medical college doctors will now retire at 70

The Assam government has risen the retirement age from 65 to 70 years of doctors in government medical colleges of the State . The decision was taken in the cabinet meeting on Friday (August 19) evening. Assam Information Minister and Government Spokesperson Piyush Hazarika said the number of experienced doctors was not proportionate to the number of medical colleges, which are now seven. "Retirement age of doctors thus increased to meet the shortage,". The state government has sanctioned Rs 136.8 crore for the implementation of the 'Free Medicines and Consumables' scheme for hospitals including tea gardens.

COVID-19 cases increasing in India

India reported a one-day rise of 12,608 new coronavirus infections taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 4,42,98,864, while active cases fell to 1,01,343. The national death toll has reached 5,27,206 with 72 fatalities, including 29 in Kerala. Active cases comprised 0.23 percent of total infections, as the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.58 percent, the health ministry said. The number of people who recovered from the disease has increased to 4,36,70,315. The total mortality rate to date stands at 1.19 percent.
