South Africa expands digital travel authorisation to ease entry for Indian tourists

South Africa has expanded its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system to simplify travel procedures for eligible Indian visitors, introducing new features for families, minors and group applications as part of efforts to strengthen tourism ties with India.

The enhanced digital platform allows eligible Indian passport holders to apply for travel authorisation entirely online, eliminating the need to visit visa processing centres or obtain traditional visa stickers. The system now supports applications for minors, including biometric enrolment through the Home Affairs National Identification System (HANIS) for children aged seven and above. A multi-applicant facility has also been introduced to enable families and groups to apply through a single portal.

The ETA is now operational across 53 countries, including markets previously covered under South Africa’s eVisaprogramme, which will be discontinued from December 1, 2026. The expansion is being implemented in phases, with further markets targeted ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.

In Kolkata, the simplified authorisation process could encourage greater interest in South Africa among families, leisure tourists and cricket enthusiasts. The combination of safari experiences, cultural attractions and sporting events could strengthen the destination’s appeal among travellers from eastern India.

Neliswa Nkani, Hub Head MEISEA, South African Tourism, said the initiative would make travel planning easier while encouraging Indian visitors to explore the country’s wildlife, landscapes and cultural heritage beyond cricket.

Travellers have been advised to check eligibility and apply through the official South African Department of Home Affairs ETA portal. Final entry remains subject to border authorities’ approval.
