Tata Motors, Welspun Renewable Energy join hands for 86 MW hybrid clean energy project

Tata Motors Ltd. has partnered with Welspun Renewable Energy Private Limited (WREPL) to develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project that will power four of the automobile major’s manufacturing facilities, marking a significant step in its clean energy transition and net-zero ambitions. The project, backed by a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and co-investment, will supply renewable power to Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle plants in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.

The project is expected to generate nearly 200 million units of clean electricity annually while offsetting more than 1.4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Tata Motors said the initiative will strengthen its progress towards achieving its RE100 target by 2030 and support its broader sustainability roadmap focused on responsible manufacturing and net-zero emissions.

Tata Motors Vice President – Operations Vishal Badshah said the integrated wind-solar solution would ensure a reliable supply of renewable energy for key manufacturing facilities while substantially reducing operational carbon emissions. Welspun Renewable Energy MD and CEO KapilMaheshwari described the partnership as a milestone that would help demonstrate how large manufacturers can accelerate decarbonisation and meet sustainability goals through renewable energy.

In Kolkata, the agreement highlights the growing momentum of industrial decarbonisation across India and is expected to reinforce confidence in renewable energy investments among eastern India’s manufacturing ecosystem. Industry observers believe the initiative could encourage more companies in and around Kolkata to adopt long-term green power procurement strategies as businesses increasingly align operations with environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments and national clean energy goals.
