An abandoned jail complex in North Tripura will be converted into marketplace for items produced by members of women self-help groups and rural entrepreneurs under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM).
With a project cost of Rs 1.01 crore, the place will house a cosy coffee house, a restaurant serving delicious food, exclusive products made by women SHG members and handcrafted and locally produced items.
“We have proposed to use the abandoned subdivision jail at Dharmanagar by setting up a marketplace, and the TRLM authority accepted our proposal. Renovation work has already begun, and the facilities are expected to open before Durga Puja,” District Magistrate, North Tripura, Chandni Chandran said.
The integrated marketing centre will be christened as “Juri Haat”.
Officials associated with the project said the initiative will help bridge the gap between rural producers and consumers by providing a professionally managed platform for the sale and promotion of indigenous products. The centre is also expected to generate additional income opportunities for women engaged in livelihood activities under the rural development programme.
The redevelopment of the old jail campus has reached an advanced stage, with renovation work reported to be more than 90 per cent complete.
