Australia’s unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 4.5% in April, the highest since November 2021, reflecting a major cooling in the country’s labor market. Data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the economy lost 18600 jobs over the month, versus consensus forecasts for a modest gain of 15000 positions. The fall was mostly due to a shrinking in female employment, with 10,700 fewer full-time jobs and 7,900 fewer part-time jobs.
