Heavy rains lashed the districts of north Bengal, leading to flooding in low lying areas of Jalpaiguri and other places on Saturday, even as the MeT department forecast heavy to very heavy showers in the region for the next two days. Several places in Mainaguri block were inundated owing to heavy rains, officials said. People in the low-lying areas are being removed to safer places, they said. Students who passed Madhyamik 2020 have been advised not to physically participate in the process of admission to Class XI. Their guardians will have to complete the formalities, education minister Partha Chatterjee said. Around 86.34 per cent of the examinees passed Madhyamik 2020, the results of which were declared on Wednesday. “The highest ever,” board president Kalyanmoy Ganguly said, referring to the percentage of the students who passed. Over one lakh Indians have returned home from Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh by land borders as part of the central government's 'Vande Bharat' Mission operationalised to evacuate stranded citizens from foreign countries amid the coronavirus-infused lockdown, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday. India Tally Crosses 9.68 Lakh-mark

India recorded a total of 32,695 cases of coronavirus infections in a single day for the first time. Total number of cases 9,68,876 on Thursday, while the death toll climbed to 24,915 with 606 people succumbing to the disease, according to the Union Health Ministry data. ₹500 fine for people without masks

In the wake of rise in COVID-19 cases in Gujarat's Surat city, the civic body here on Wednesday said people found without masks in public places will have to shell out ₹500 as fine. The Surat Municipal Corporation had earlier imposed a penalty of ₹200 on people who stepped out of their homes without the protective gear. Action will be taken against violators under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the IPC and Epidemic Diseases Act, municipal commissioner B N Pani said in an order.
