Purpose-driven learning gains focus as educators seek to ease academic pressure

As India places greater emphasis on developing a future-ready workforce, educators are calling for a shift from exam-centric education to purpose-driven learning that nurtures creativity, emotional well-being and lifelong skills alongside academic achievement.

Neelima Kamrah, Principal of KIIT World School, said students today face mounting pressure from academic competition, social expectations, peer comparison, digital distractions and career concerns, often leading them to associate learning with stress rather than curiosity. She said while academic excellence remains important, education must encourage children to understand, explore and innovate instead of merely pursuing grades.

Kamrah said schools have a critical role in preparing students for life by creating classrooms where children feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes and discover their strengths. She stressed that teachers can drive this transformation by recognising effort and progress, helping students develop a growth mindset that views challenges as opportunities.

She also highlighted the importance of purpose-driven learning through real-world applications, project-based education and creative problem-solving, saying these approaches make learning more meaningful and relevant. Highlighting the role of parents, Kamrah said celebrating perseverance and personal growth instead of report cards can foster healthier learning habits.

She added that nurturing emotionally intelligent, adaptable and innovative learners will be essential for India’s evolving knowledge economy, where success will increasingly depend on lifelong learning rather than examination scores alone.
